2016 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards Winners Announced

Wildlife Photographer Starts Comedy Competition
While there are lots of photo competitions for nature and wildlife photography out there, this one stands out for the unique concept–specifically focusing on photos that make us smile, giggle, and laugh out loud!
Take the photo above, which is the overall winner of the competition. The photo itself is funny, but combined with photographer Angela Bohlke’s title: “A Tough Day at the Office”, the image takes on an even more humorous slant. One that all humans can relate to.
Applying human emotions and perspectives to the images is part of the appeal. Take ‘Cheetah Pondering the Speed Limit…”Well this sucks!” by Vaughan Jessnitz as another example. Of course we know the cheetah is not actually looking at the sign…but Jessnitz’ composition sure makes it seem that way. And because we all know how fast these cats are…well, it all adds up to a really funny shot.
Another example of clever titling aiding in the humor is this shot by Nicolas de Vaulx. Simple called “Damn!” it won the Creatures in the Air category
The Comedy Wildlife Photography competition is the brainchild of Paul Joynson-Hicks, an award winning photographer in his own right and one of the judges.
The essence of the competition is to raise awareness of the wildlife that we live with. Comedy is an essential part of our lives, and there are thousands of occasions when pets and wild animals alike behave in a funny manner. ~panel judge Tom Sullam
Now living in Tanzania with his family which has inspired this venture, which he has tagged ‘Conservation through Competition’
Some of the photos are both funny and, well…kind of sweet…when we apply our human perspective. Such is the case with the Highly Commended ‘Hello’ by Philip Marazzi
Taking a look at these photos, we think you will agree the tag could have been ‘Conservation through Comedy’!
Weigh in and let us know which gave you the biggest chuckle. And if you find you have some funny shots, consider applying for next year’s comedy wildlife photography awards!
